UNMHA's Head of Mission briefs the Security Council

Hudaydah, 24 July 2024 – Yesterday, UNMHA's Head of Mission and Co-chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee Major General (rtd) Michael Beary briefed the Security Council in a closed session on Yemen, which included briefings from the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, and the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya.

Maj. Gen. Beary updated the Council on the situation in Hudaydah and on Mission's activities, including UNMHA's recent engagements with the parties as well as the Mission’s sustained monitoring of the three Yemen Red Sea ports. UNMHA's Head of Mission emphasised that maintaining the ports of Hudaydah, Ras Isa, and Salif operational remained critical - particularly Hudaydah port: a lifeline for millions of Yemenis.

Maj. Gen. Beary called for the continued support of the Security Council to UNMHA efforts in Hudaydah. UNMHA's Head of Mission echoed the Secretary-General’s deep concern about the risk of further escalation in the region, calling all concerned to avoid attacks that could harm civilians and damage civilian infrastructure.
