The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, met with Greek Cypriot leader Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, on 6 December 2025, during her visit to the island. The meeting followed her discussions with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Tufan Erhürman, the previous day.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Ms. Holguín said it was “very productive.” Reflecting on her recent participation in a retreat of the Technical Committee on Youth in Amman, she underlined the importance of building on the positive spirit demonstrated there. “I think that we can move forward in a positive way,” she said, noting that preparations are ongoing for the upcoming meeting between the two leaders. “We are preparing the meeting for Thursday,” she explained. “I hope it’s going to be a very substantial and very productive meeting.”
The Personal Envoy emphasized that it is essential for both leaders to take advantage of this renewed engagement and for the communities to support them in their efforts. “If they can deliver things and move forward, the community has to support the leaders to move in that direction,” she said.
