Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the SG on the attack in Mogadishu

New York, 12 September 2012 – The Secretary-General strongly condemns today's attack on the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, in which newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was meeting with the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Professor Samuel Ongeri, in the presence of international media. He is saddened by the deaths of several Somali and AMISOM soldiers who responded to the incident. [Statement]
