Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Statement from the SRSG Mahiga on attack in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, 12 September 2012 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga strongly condemns today's attack on the Jazeera Hotel in which President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was giving a press conference. The incident came as President Hassan Sheikh was meeting with the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Professor Samuel Ongeri in the presence of international media.
