Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UN Special Representative for Somalia statement on the nomination of the new Prime Minister

Mogadishu, 06 October 2012 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Augustine P. Mahiga, congratulates Mr. Abdi Farah Shirdon "Saacid" on his nomination for the post of Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

"I extend my warmest congratulations to Prime Minister-designate Shirdon on his nomination and wish him every success in the tasks entrusted to him by President Hassan Sheikh. The appointment of a new Prime Minister is another important step forward in the country's peacebuilding process," SRSG Mahiga said.
