Representative of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights visits Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa

16 September 2014 - The Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Head of BNUB Human Rights and Justice section, Jean-Luc Marx, on Tuesday morning visited APRODH's president Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa at hospital Bumerec, in Bujumbura.

Addressing the human rights activist, Mr. Marx reminded that "the international community is following his case with great interest and concern". He added that in addition to APRODH president's health, the main concern is about freedom of expression in Burundi.

The visit comes a day after a High Court in Bujumbura rejected the pleas to release on bail Pierre Claver Mbonimpa requested by his lawyers. The court decided that a medical commission composed of three doctors appointed by the Government will evaluate, within ten days, if Pierre Claver Mbonimpa should be granted bail or remain in prison.

The human rights activist was hospitalized ten days ago following the deterioration of his health at Bujumbura' s Mpimba prison. He was arrested in May and is accused of endangering internal and external State security.
