UN in Yemen: A History

At the research farm, in Hudaydah which is operated with assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), work in a maize field being done under the supervision of a UN Volunteer. Agriculture in Yemen is largely of a subsistence nature with grains, fruits, vegetables and cotton being the main crops. Insufficient rainfall and lack of permanent surface water severely restrict the scope of agriculture. With help from the Food and Agriculture Organization under the UN Development Programme, the Government has undertaken several irrigation schemes in an effort to increase the agriculture. 1953.
